Russia City Breaks

A guide to Russia

Russia is not necessarily the first place everyone thinks of going when planning a city break, and this makes it all the more enticing for those who do. Short trips to Russia are focused mainly on Moscow and St. Petersburg, the two major cities, and an increasing number of regular flights from the UK to both of these majestic gems are making them ever more accessible. With a unique culture and recent history, Russia is a fascinating option for a very different weekend away, and the striking architecture and individual character of both Moscow and St. Petersburg offer a wealth of opportunities for discovering this part of the world.

Majestic Moscow

Moscow offers visitors a vast selection of cultural attractions and activities to keep even the most eager culture-vulture occupied for days. As the Russian capital and the country’s most populated city, Moscow is buzzing with the energy and dynamism of a thriving European capital, and there is plenty to admire at every turn. As well as viewing the Kremlin and Red Square, wandering through the wide streets, you will discover the diverse architecture of the city with monumental buildings, such as the brightly coloured St. Basil’s Cathedral occupying one of the many extensive public squares. Over 100 parks and gardens across the city allow for relaxing afternoons enjoying the well-managed green areas during the summer months, whilst Moscow in winter offers the perfect opportunity to take in some of the impressive collection of national museums and galleries in the city.

Elegant St. Petersburg

St. Petersburg has long been hailed as one of Russia’s most beautiful and elegant cities, and when arriving in the city for the first time, it’s not hard to see why. The historic city centre of St. Petersburg is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the grand boulevards are perfect for relaxing walks to soak in the atmosphere, whilst over 200 museums across the city provide plenty of cultural stimulation and the chance to gain a real insight into this important city. You'll also enjoy some unforgettable Russian delicacies in the many restaurants and cafes, or sample the local Russian vodka at night.
