Moscow City Breaks
A guide to Moscow
Moscow is a city at the heart of the great epic sweep of Russian history. The incredible extremes of the city (not least its climate) ensure a short break here is an unforgettable experience. As well as the great historical sights of the Kremlin and Red Square, Moscow provides an endlessly fascinating insight into contemporary Russian society, with all its contradictions and contrasts.
Red Square and the Kremlin
Few short breaks are long enough to take in everything to see in this enigmatic city, but all will inevitably centre on the city’s familiar iconic sights: the Kremlin and Red Square. Most visitors are astonished by the sheer extent of the Kremlin and the variety of sights within, which include cathedrals and palaces, as well as government buildings. You can view Lenin’s Mausoleum, go shopping in the famous GUM department store or simply take in the amazing spectacle of the domes of St Basil’s Cathedral.
Great Russian city of epic proportions
Moscow offers plenty of fine museums and galleries, along with world-famous ballet and opera at the Bolshoi Theatre and an amazing circus tradition. As well as history and culture, Moscow offers entertaining walks in Gorky Park, boat trips on the Moscow River, fascinating shopping, fine dining and some truly sophisticated nightlife. Winters will find the city looking romantic under the snow, but the weather can be extremely cold. The summer months are the most popular, but spring and autumn weekends offer temperatures that are far better for sightseeing, and Russian cultural life is in full swing, with far fewer tourists.
