Valencia La Tomatina
The most famous food fight in the world
Situated 40 kilometres from Valencia is the small town of Bunol, known as the site of one of the most surreal and colourful annual events to be found anywhere in the world. La Tomatina is a week-long festival that revolves around a chaotic food fight, using nothing but over ripe tomatoes. Over 100 tonnes are used as up to 40,000 revellers take to the streets in a messy free for all, that offers tremendous fun and an utterly unique atmosphere. During the preceding days, many festivities take place that include concerts, parades, dancing and fireworks, and the party atmosphere continues well into the night, with a great range of late night entertainment at open air events and bars.
Messy fun and excitement for all ages
Known primarily for its youthful exuberance, La Tomatina attracts visitors of all ages, with the sole intention of having unrestrained fun and thrills with likeminded individuals. The fact that the actual tomato fight lasts for less than one hour is testament to its endearing popularity, and is especially popular with British visitors. Once the chaos subsides, each participant is hosed down with water and the streets of Bunol are thoroughly cleaned of any tomato pulp.
Invitingly close to stylish Valencia
A small town of under 10,000 inhabitants, Bunol is ill-equipped to cater to all who wish to attend with accommodation very limited. Most visitors chose to enjoy a stylish break in nearby Valencia, a charming Mediterranean port known for its artist heritage and shopping. Whilst in Valencia, you should certainly view the wonderful art treasures of the Museo de Bellas Artes and the glorious cathedral of La Seu, reputedly containing the cup of the Holy Grail. During La Tomatina, special train and bus services leave regularly from the city centre.
