Getting from Vienna airport
Vienna International Airport is located 11 miles southeast of Vienna and is the busiest and biggest airport in Austria. It is often referred to as Schwechat, the name of the nearby town. The airport is currently undergoing a major expansion to prepare for an expected increase in passenger traffic.

Public transport
Fare prices within the city are independent of the length of the journey and cover all modes of public transport. Tickets are also available for various time periods, such as 24 hour, monthly or yearly tickets. The Viennese public transport services are incorporated into a larger system of transport zones; the VOR, which includes railway and bus lines operating 50kms into the surrounding areas. Ticket prices are calculated according to the number of zones and must be purchased (and often stamped) prior to boarding or entering a station.

Railways
Vienna has many train stations that are the beginning of several train lines: Wien Franz-Josefs-Bahnhof, the Franz Josef Railway; Wien Westbahnhof, the Western Railway; Wien Südbahnhof (former South and East Station) for the Southern Railway and the Eastern Railway. There are also many through train stations: Wien Hütteldorf (Western Railway); Wien Heiligenstadt (Franz Josef Railway); Wien Praterstern (formerly known as Wien Nord or Wien Nord-Praterstern) on the Northern Railway and Wien Meidling (Southern Railway) the city’s busiest station. Wien Mitte (Landstraße) on the S-Bahn Stammstrecke (‘main line’) is the nearest railway station to the centre of Vienna.

Metro
The U-Bahn consists of five coloured lines – mostly running underground – and first opened in 1898. The network is interconnected with the S-Bahn system, a suburban metro railway network, and extends beyond the city boundary.

Trams
Vienna’s tram network is third largest in the world. In the most populated areas of the city, public transport runs so frequently (even during off-peak hours) that timetables are virtually unnecessary.
