Hofburg Imperial Palace
This imposing building in Vienna has incorporated the architectural skills of Italian architect-engineer Filiberto Luchese, Lodovico Burnacini, Martino and Domenico Carlone and the Baroque exponents Lukas von Hildebrandt and Joseph Emanuel Fischer von Erlach during its continual expansion over the centuries. The Hofburg area has been the documented seat of government since 1279 for various empires and republics.
Millennium Tower
Vienna’s tallest building at 202 metres and designed by the Slovenian architect Boris Podrecca the tower has 51 floors and is the focal point of the Millennium City complex.
Spanish Riding School
The Spanish Riding School of Vienna, founded in 1572, is the oldest and last riding school in the world where classic dressage is still practised in its purest form. Vienna city break visitors can watch the famous Lipizzaner horses, which are of Spanish origin, between February and June, and September and December. Performances are in high demand and are normally booked up months in advance. The easiest way to see the animals is during their training sessions where tickets are only available at the door, and cannot be booked in advance. The Lipizzaner Museum, which displays the history of the school, is situated in the stables.
Schonbrunn Palace
One of Vienna’s most important cultural monuments, and a major tourist attraction. The palace and gardens accurately illustrate the aspirations, tastes and interests of successive Habsburg monarchs. In a tour of the palace, visitors get the chance to admire the fantastic assortment of Baroque and Rococo State Rooms and to view the famous ceiling frescoes of the Great Gallery and the Hall of Mirrors where Mozart once played. The grounds include a maze and labyrinth, a zoo, the Privy garden and the Gloriette and The Orangery hosts classical concerts during the summer.
The Vienna State Opera
Founded in the early 18th century, the opera house is home to over a hundred shows – operas, operettas and ballets – every day from September to June. This romantic and regal setting is the perfect place to soak up the music and emotion of a live performance. The Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra works closely with the State Opera and their world-famous New Year concert requires advance bookings of up to one year!
