Almeria Things To Do
The Old Town
As well as the Alcazar and the cathedral, the most attractive part of Almeria features Moorish and Roman remains, archways and colonnades, and elegant old houses. This is a great area for a relaxed stroll and sampling a good selection of shops, cafes and tapas bars on your way to the seafront.
Sightseeing
The undoubted Almeria sightseeing highlight is the Alcazaba, an enormous 10th century Moorish fortress that once rivalled the Alhambra in Granada for its gardens and palaces. Huge walls enclose the ruins of a mosque that later became a Christian chapel. The hilltop location offers excellent views. The Barrio de la Chancla is the old gypsy neighbourhood noted for its unusual cave houses. The fortified 16th century cathedral is one of the strangest in Spain.
Eating & Drinking
Like Murcia to the north and Malaga to the west, Almeria offers an excellent insight into authentic Spanish dining and nightlife. Attracting far fewer tourists than Seville and Granada, Almeria offers a great collection of economical family-owned restaurants, excellent authentic tapas bars and several classy fashionable establishments. Late night dining and bar-hopping is as popular here as in Madrid. The Puerta de Purchena and the small streets off the Paseo de Almeria are packed with inviting tapas bars. Nightlife centres on a typically Spanish concentration of enjoyable music bars and discos in the city centre. August and Easter see entertaining fiestas.
Activities
There is rewarding horse riding in the desert landscapes of the interior and the more rugged parts of the coast. Snorkelling and scuba diving is popular in the Cabo de Gata Natural Park. There are good walking trails on the more isolated parts of the Almeria coast. Jeep safaris are also organised in the desert interior.
Touring & Attractions
Inland is a weird, desert-like landscape, the setting for Westerns like The Magnificent Seven and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. Theme parks like Mini Hollywood offer surreal attractions, including Western saloons and stagecoach rides. The Cabo de Gata Natural Park protects the most spectacular stretch of unspoilt coastline in southern Spain. The park features superb cliff walks, pristine isolated beaches, some nice coastal towns and intense sunshine. Popular beach resorts like Roquetas de Mar, Aguadulce, Mojácar and Carboneras can be reached by bus from Almeria.
