Avignon Getting Around

Getting Around Avignon - Convenient bus travel
For such a popular summer city break destination Avignon is surprisingly free of congestion and features a wide expanse of pedestrian only streets and walkways. It is relatively compact too where leisurely exploration on foot is possible. Getting around Avignon by bus is a simple exercise with the majority of services terminating at centrally located Place d'Horloge, close to most of its popular attractions. Frequency is good during the week but there is only a limited operation on Sundays. Some routes call at many historic towns and villages throughout Provence, although hiring a car or taking a taxi will be more convenient. Weekend bus passes and carnets of 10 tickets can be purchased at city tabacs and its two bus stations. There are also express bus services from the airport and also the mainline TGV station which is the arrival point of direct Eurostar services from London.

Getting Around Avignon - Stress free motoring
To fully take advantage of the city and the surrounding Provence countryside, hiring a car is the most rewarding way. Unlike many other popular towns and cities in the South of France, getting around Avignon by car is a piece of cake. There are no confusing one way systems and abundant parking both in the city and on the outskirts where park and ride schemes are in place. However during the famous Avignon Festival in June there are traffic restrictions in place which is eased somewhat with extra bus capacity and frequency. Car hire is available at many locations in the city and at the airport and train station.

Getting Around Avignon - Explore fabulous scenery by bike
In addition to its TGV intercity rail station, there are local services to regional towns in Provence such as Arles and Nimes which provide a fabulous opportunity to enjoy the scenic countryside en route. Services however are infrequent and departure times are more conducive to commuters rather than visiting tourists. Taxis are a more expensive alternative and can also be chartered for a whole day. There is always a good availability of taxis in the city which can be booked by phone or hailed by the roadside. Getting around Avignon by bicycle or moped is a fun way to explore the city and can be hired for the day at many outlets. It also offers ample opportunity to get off the beaten track and discover a ruggedly beautiful landscape just outside the city limits.
