Palais des Papes
This regal former Papal residence is an elegantly preserved palace that still displays plenty of opulence and exuberant artworks dating back many centuries. It features charming flower gardens and sumptuous furnishings and is an UNESCO world heritage site that is definitely worth a visit during an Avignon city break.


Avignon Festival
Avignon hosts the most famous arts festival in France that sees the city awash with colour and energy every June. Up to 150,000 visitors will witness live theatre, opera, dance, film screenings and even circus performers. Incredibly vibrant and eclectic, it offers something for all - be it pop culture or gala classical concerts with many free performances in the open air.


Le Pont St Benezet
This ancient bridge is an icon of Avignon's medieval past and one of its most visited attractions. Immortalised in film and song, it affords sweeping views of the city and lush Provence countryside from its highest point. It exudes a romantic charm that is all the more evocative due to its ruined condition.


Shopping
Avignon has become something of a shoppers' paradise in recent years and provides tree lined streets filled with fashionable boutiques and historic open air markets offering quirky bric a brac, fresh flowers and delicious local produce. The city is noted for its lavender, olive oil and Provencal ceramics which are sure to make the ideal gift for a loved one.


Excursions
Spend a day exploring the historic towns and villages in the region with a rewarding day trip into the countryside. The Roman town of Arles is one of the most popular tours from Avignon and features an imposing amphitheatre and numerous Roman villas. The elegant city of Nimes is also worth exploring or indulge in the finest wine with a visit to the coveted wine estate of Chateauneuf du Pape.

Avignon cannot compete with the nightlife of Lyon or Marseille but has much to offer discerning culture buffs with an excellent range of venues showcasing live jazz, ballet, classical concerts and also has an acclaimed opera house. The opera season runs from October until June and features world renowned exponents and gala performances. There is also a vibrant independent film scene in Avignon with several specialist film festivals scheduled throughout the year.
