Getting around Hamburg
The city’s excellent integrated public transport system makes getting around on a city break to Hamburg fast and efficient. Hamburg public transport consists of the U-Bahn (underground), the S-Bahn (suburban trains), buses and harbour ferries. Trains and buses run until about midnight, and 24 hours on Fridays and Saturdays. A hassle-free and economical way of getting around Hamburg is the Hamburg Card: unlimited travel for a day on all public transport, plus discounts or free admission to museums, city tours and lake cruises. One-day and three-day versions are available, with special cards for families. Hamburg cards are available from larger hotels, important U-Bahn stations and the tourist office.
Getting to/from Hamburg airport
Hamburg airport is just five miles from Hamburg. The Airport Express bus is a frequent service to Hauptbahnhof, the central station. Pay on the bus. A Travel Porter transfer service organises transfers to hotels. A taxi will take around 30 minutes. A new train service is planned for 2008/9. Some low-cost airlines fly into Lübeck-Blankensee airport, 50 miles from Hamburg. Buses to the central bus station take 1 hour and 10 minutes.
Walking
A well-planned day walking in Hamburg can take in most of the significant sights, attractions, museums and shopping streets. Hamburg has some excellent parks, plenty of trees, and some fascinating waterfront areas with its canals, harbour and lakes.
The U-Bahn
The Hamburg U-Bahn is one of the best underground systems in Germany. An efficient system serves the city centre. The U-Bahn connects with S-Bahn suburban trains. Tickets are available at station ticket offices and machines.

Bus
Hamburg buses come in various forms but all are efficient. Hamburg night buses operate in the city centre.
Taxi
Hamburg taxis are easily found at taxi ranks and stations, and are less expensive than in many other German cities. Useful for getting home from Hamburg nightlife.

Cycling is a popular way around Hamburg in the summer months. There are plenty of bicycle hire outlets in Hamburg
Ferry
Hamburg ferry services operate from Hamburg harbour and along the River Elbe. These ferries are considered part of the transport system. Hamburg ferries like the number 62 to Finkenwerder are a very cheap way of enjoying the scenery. Scenic Hamburg boat trips on both Alster lakes leave from Jungfernstieg in the city centre.
Sightseeing tours
