Hamburg Things To Do

Harbour & Canal Cruises
A Hamburg city break must take in a cruise. Hamburg is known as the Venice of the north, and has more bridges than either Venice or Amsterdam. Cruises operate around the harbour, on Hamburg’s canals and on Lake Alster. Night cruises are particularly romantic. Don’t miss the historic Speicherstadt district with its turreted, 19th century, waterfront warehouses. The Speicherstadt, which is beautifully lit at night, is also home to a spice museum, a massive model railway, a Russian submarine and the macabre Hamburg Dungeon.

Hamburg Fish Market
The Altona Fish Market has been a Hamburg institution since the beginning of the 18th century. Hamburg Fischmarkt is the place to be on Sunday morning, but get there early! The Fish Auction Hall is a brilliantly atmospheric place for breakfast. The market sells much more than just fish, and also features live music.

Galleries & Museums
The Hamburger Kunsthalle (Hamburg Art Museum) is one of Germany’s finest. The original gallery and its striking modern extension have a particularly impressive collection of modern art, including Klee, Kandinsky, Warhol, Hockney, Kandinsky, Munch and Picasso The museum also boasts medieval religious works and Dutch masters like Rembrandt, Steen and Pieter de Hooch. Top Hamburg attractions include the Spice Museum, the Museum of Hamburg History, the Erotic Art Museum and an outstanding zoo and planetarium.

The Reeperbahn
Hamburg's famous St. Pauli red light district rivals Amsterdam, but is not just about sex. The Reeperbahn area is a major tourist attraction with plenty of reputable nightlife and a worldwide reputation for live music, cabaret, casinos and nightclubs. Legendary Hamburg nightlife includes a thriving clubbing scene that only really gets going after midnight. The St Pauli district is colourful in every way. The cosmopolitan mix (which includes plenty of tourists) is never less than interesting, and frequently surreal. Don’t miss the Erotic Art Museum!

Parks & Botanical Gardens
Hamburg parks are wonderfully restful spots after a busy night out! Planten un Blomen, in the gorgeous Wallringpark, contains Europe’s largest Japanese garden, and hosts Japanese tea rituals in its tea house. The gardens are beautifully lit at night and host regular concerts and light shows. The Hirschpark has deer and a lovely, old-fashioned café. The Stadtpark holds summer concerts and features the planetarium. Alsterpark on the banks of Alster Lake, provides unbeatable views of the Hamburg skyline.
