Moscow Things To Do
The Kremlin & Red Square
Most Moscow city break visitors are amazed at the extent of the Kremlin and the host of attractions found within its walls, which include churches, palaces, state treasures and museums as well as government buildings. Top Kremlin attractions include the Cathedral of the Assumption, the Ivan the Great Bell Tower, the Cathedral of the Archangel Michael, the Arsenal, the Patriarch's Palace and the Cathedral of the Twelve Apostles. Nearby are the National Museum of Russian Fine Art and the riverside Sculpture Garden. Red Square is surely Moscow’s most iconic sight, containing the colourful domes of the 16th century St. Basil’s Cathedral and the unforgettable Lenin Mausoleum. You will also find the Kremlin Wall, the famous GUM department store and the Historical Museum.
The Bolshoi Theatre & the Moscow Circus
The stunning Bolshoi Theatre is home to Moscow’s famous ballet company but also presents opera. There are daily performances throughout most of the year. A visit to the circus in Moscow is highly recommended even if you think you don’t like the circus! The Great Moscow State Circus is spectacular and worth the admission for the vast auditorium alone. Other worthwhile Moscow circuses include The Tsvetnoi Bulvar Circus and the Circus on Sparrow Hills.
Gorky Park & the Moscow River
This vast park runs for 2 miles along the river and includes fairgrounds, roller coasters and a big wheel. Gorky Park is magical in the winter when Muscovites go skating on the enormous pond. Food stalls and a beer garden make this a great spot for people watching and relaxing. Boat cruises on the river are ideal for cooling off on a hot summer’s day. The impressive Victory Park has boating, skating and excellent views.
Izmailovsky street market
This all-day street market is a great favourite with Moscow weekend break visitors. A great place to find all kinds of weird and wonderful souvenirs, including Soviet-era memorabilia. Plenty of street entertainers and places to eat and drink. Afterwards, visit the Izmailovo Royal Palace.
Moscow Metro
Many visitors to Moscow find themselves increasingly enthralled by Moscow’s glorious metro stations. The best examples feature vast palatial ceilings, stained glass, sculptures, statues, fantastic mosaics and even chandeliers.
