Copenhagen Getting Around

Getting from Copenhagen airport
Copenhagen Airport is the major airport for Denmark but also serves Malmö in Sweden. Located 4 miles south of the city centre on the island Amager, the airport lies mainly in the municipality of Tårnby, with a small portion in neighbouring Dragør.

Public transport
Discount cards, known as punch cards (klippekort), as well as period cards, are available. Ticket prices are high and have increased substantially in recent years. They can be transferred from one means of transport to another (e.g. from bus to train) as long as the time limit is not exceeded.

Trains
Built in 1934, the S-Train (S-tog) network is the commuter train network of Metropolitan Copenhagen and connects the city centre with the suburbs. The network forms the heart of the public transportation infrastructure in the city and the trains run below ground level with one underground station. The 7 lines, with 11 services, run in the open, often on embankments, outside the city centre.

Cycle lanes
Copenhagen is one of the most bicycle-friendly cities in the world. The bicycle paths – which are often separated from the main traffic lanes and sometimes have their own signal systems – are extensive and well-used and the city provides public bicycles which can be found throughout the downtown area and used with a returnable deposit of 20 kroner.

Metro
The Copenhagen Metro opened in 2002 and currently has two lines – Green and Yellow – with 17 stations. Plans for an additional City Circle Line have been approved by the Danish Parliament and the new stations will increase the number of metro stations to 37.

Taxis
Taxis ready for hire carry a sign with the word FRI (free) on display. There is a taxi rank outside Central Station and the basic fare is 22kr, then 10kr per km, or 11kr on a Sunday, and most vehicles accept payment by credit card. There are also bike taxis for two passengers that can be hailed in the street and cost between 25kr and 90kr. Don’t forget, everyone speaks English in Copenhagen so explaining your destination should be trouble-free.

Walking
Much of Copenhagen is pedestrianised so many of the city’s attractions can be reached on foot.
