Munich Things To Do

Oktoberfest
This world famous two-week festival is popular with city break visitors and is held during late September and early October. Attended by six million people, the event is referred to locally as “d’ Wiesn”. Beer plays a central role in the fair, with every festival beginning with a keg of beer tapped by the Mayor of Munich who declares “O'zapft is!” (Bavarian: ‘It’s tapped!’). The Oktoberfest was first held on October 12, 1810 in honour of the marriage of crown prince Ludwig to Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen. A must on any ‘things to do’ list.

The National Theatre
The Nationaltheater München opera house is situated on Max-Joseph-Platz and is home of The Bayerische Staatsoper, or Bavarian State Opera. The first theatre, commissioned by King Maximilian 1st of Bavaria and designed by Karl von Fischer, opened in 1818 with ‘Die Weihe’ by Ferdinand Fränzl and was destroyed by fire in 1823. The original neo-classical 2,100 seat theatre was recreated by architect Gerhard Moritz Graubner in 1963 has seen many world premieres since.

Gasteig
This cultural centre is home to the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra. The Richard-Strauss-Conservatory, the folk high school, and the municipal library are all located here and most of the Filmfest of Munich events take place here too.

Viktualienmarkt
A tasty Munich city break activity, this daily food market developed from an original farmers’ meeting place to a popular market for gourmets! Over 140 stalls and shops offer cheese, poultry, flowers, exotic fruit, game, spices and fish. There are special opening hours for flower shops, bakeries and restaurants.

Nightlife
There are over 6,000 licensed establishments in the city, especially in Schwabing, the main quarter for students and artists. Popular establishments include Optimolwerke, former industrial areas converted to many different discos and pubs and the Hofbräuhaus, one of the oldest breweries in Munich, located in the city centre near Tal.

Deutsches Museum
The building covers over 13 acres of exhibitions and contains invaluable original machines and equipment, models and reconstructions – from classical mechanics and telecommunications to a full-size reconstructed coal mine and space travel technology – and is the largest museum of technology and natural sciences in the world. A trip here should be included on any sightseeing itinerary.
