Seville Things To Do

The Cathedral & Giralda minaret
Seville cathedral is the largest Gothic cathedral in the world and would impress for its sheer sense of grandeur alone were in not for its amazing set pieces like the altar and retablo. Alongside is the gorgeous 12th century Moorish minaret that became the bell tower of the cathedral with the Christian reconquest. Climb the Giralda for fantastic views of the city and the cathedral itself.

The Alcazar
The vast Alcazar palace has dominated Seville since Roman times. The building reflects Seville’s long history under Moorish rule and the power of the Christian reconquest. The palace buildings are a fascinating mix of architectural styles, with enchanting patios, courtyards and galleries. The delightful Alcazar gardens offer a wonderful respite from the summer heat.

Barrio Santa Cruz & Triana
Few cities can match Seville for romance and no Seville neighbourhood is prettier than Barrio Santa Cruz, a delightful place to stroll, to sample bars and to generally soak up the atmosphere. The Barrio is a delightful maze of narrow lanes, orange trees, flower-decked whitewashed houses and idyllic patios. You will find some wonderful bars in the area and beautiful mansions like the Casa de Pilatos. Make sure you cross the River Guadalquivir to the Triana neighbourhood, another fantastically atmospheric area with excellent bars and restaurants bursting with Andalusian character.

Tapas
Seville is tapas heaven. The sheer quantity of bars is astonishing and the quality is uniformly excellent. Seville tapas bars are the best way to experience the character and energy of the city and the Sevillanos themselves. Many of Seville’s bars feel like living museums, with beautiful wooden floors, sherry barrels and old-fashioned fittings. Newer tapas bars are elegant, stylish places offering a mouth-watering list of classic tapas alongside delicious modern creations, with plenty to satisfy vegetarians.

Nightlife
Many British visitors are astonished to find Seville’s streets animated and sociable until the early hours. Seville nightlife can be enjoyed on many levels: a simple pavement cafe, a lively tapas bar, a trendy haunt tucked into the narrowest of alleys or the most stylish of lively nightclubs. Remember this is Spain at its late-night best so dine late, don’t expect flamenco bars or nightspots to get going much before midnight and be prepared to go with the flow.
