Verona City Breaks
A guide to Verona
Verona is considered one of the most beautiful destinations in Italy. The city boasts gorgeous Romanesque architecture and stunning Roman monuments, and the entire historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visitors will naturally gravitate to the banks of the twisting River Adige and the twin squares of Piazza delle Erbe and Piazza dei Signori, and even the shortest of breaks will allow time for the Roman city gates, the medieval Ponte Scaligero and Romanesque gems like the Basilica of San Zeno Maggiore. Climb to the Castell San Pietro for spectacular city views.
Italy at its romantic best
This is the setting for Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, and no visit here is complete without viewing the 14th century Casa di Romeo and that famous balcony. The city boasts excellent nightlife, which revolves around an enjoyable collection of bars and clubs, and Verona is home to world-class drama, dance, classical music and opera. The Teatro Romano is one of the world’s great live venues: a vast Roman amphitheatre superbly adapted for modern-day performances, and also outstanding is the Renaissance Teatro Filarmonico.
Divine food and wine, la dolce vita
Weekend breaks will also delight lovers of fine wine and Italian cuisine, as the city is awash with charming cafes, smart boutiques, traditional shops and superb food markets. For a break from Romanesque bliss, you could visit the famous vineyards of the Valpolicella and Soave, or head to stylish Italian resorts on magnificent Lake Garda. Look out for cheap fares in the spring and autumn, when the weather is comfortable for relaxed sightseeing, and the surrounding hills and vineyards are a scenic delight.
