Squares, Parks & Beaches
The charming market square of Lilla Torg is a great spot for open-air cafes and restaurants. The pretty Gamla Väster neighbourhood has fine galleries, designer shops and classy restaurants. The Möllevången area is a colourful mix of nationalities. Don’t miss the Fiskehoddorna traditional fish market and the weekend street market in Torso Möllevångstorget square. The Saluhallen market features food from all over the world. Malmo is famous for its fine parks with charming, early 20th century pavilions, atmospheric cafes and fine gardens. Parks like Hedmanska Garden host frequent summer concerts. Ribersborg beach is a surprisingly good sandy beach within walking distance of the city centre.
The Western Harbour
A fine example of urban regeneration. The Western Harbour area features the Turning Torso, Scandinavia’s tallest building. The area is packed with restaurants and bars and offers superb views of the Oresund. Interesting walks along canals and the waterfront promenade. You can swim from the beaches and specially built decking. Hardy winter visitors could join the locals in the cold bath house, where sea swimming is combined with a steaming waterside sauna!
Sights
Strolling around on city break in Malmo you will come across dozens of charming buildings. Highlights include the 16th century Town Hall, the Kockska Huset, and the City Library. Malmöhus Castle is the oldest Renaissance castle in Scandinavia. 14th century St Petri Church is the city’s oldest. Visit the Mazetti chocolate factory on Bergsgatan Street, which is now a cultural centre. Other fine buildings include the French Renaissance Hotel Kramer, the superb Apoteket Lejonet pharmacy, the 18th century Governor’s House and the charming medieval ensemble at St Gertrud block.
Museums & Galleries
Many of the best Malmo museums are in and around the castle. Highlights include the City Museum, the Natural History Museum, the Kommendanthuset military museum, the Commandant's House and the Rooseum art gallery with its collection of Nordic art. Children will enjoy the Aquarium, the Tropicarium, the Museum of Technology and the Maritime Museum. The Form Design Center traces the history of design. Charming smaller museums include the Carriage Museum, the delightful Ebba's House, the Castle Mill, the Fishermen's Huts and the Tram Museum. Koggmuseet features two recreated medieval ships.
Lund & Copenhagen
Take the short rain journey to the picturesque university town of Lund, which also boasts a fantastic Romanesque cathedral noted for its wood carving and medieval astronomical clock. The trip to Copenhagen features the extraordinary Öresund Bridge. You can be in the centre of Copenhagen in just 30 minutes! Another popular Malmo excursion is the Svaneholm fortress palace between Malmö and Ystad.
